Sorella Party 2015

January 11, 2015

Sorella Cycling ushered in the new year partying together at Ormsby’s this past Saturday, January 10th.  This west side neighborhood tavern was a great place to meet and continue to showcase our competitive natures with Bocce, Shuffleboard and many other games!  The food and drinks were fabulous too.  Check out our Facebook page for more pics!

Lisa Randall’s Mountain Bike Clinic last November 2014

December 30, 2014
SorellaClinic114On the Sunday after Thanksgiving, several brave Sorellas gathered at Lisa Randall’s house for an advanced mountain biking clinic on the “Randall private mountain bike reserve.”  The day started out cloudy and chilly, but some of us were sweating for reasons other than exertion.  At first glance, the course seemed short, but had some wicked technical sections, both natural and engineered to make them harder.  Lisa started with the “easy”stuff which still wasn’t for the faint of heart.  She ramped each new line up a notch, and many Sorellas rode the challenges with beauty and skill.   You had to have nerves of steel, but a body position like a relaxed spring to make it through most of the lines.  Some of us chose to save it for another day, while other’s had spectacular crashes. Lisa ended the warm, sunny afternoon with a final sketchy downhill where you had to squeeze between two trees and still be lined up to make it through the rocks.  Yikes!  Lisa was proud to finally find a line no one would try, except her of course. Thanks for a great day, Lisa, and a special thanks to your mom for helping with lunch. Also, Trish Albert took some great pictures of successful runs as well as some great crashes.
Lisa Randall is a prominent figure in the local mountain biking and cyclocross race scene and runs Mountain Goat Adventures.  Mountain Goat Adventures produces several off-road biking and running races including the Southern Cross Ultra Gravel Grinder coming up on February 21, 2015.  Lisa and her husband, Chris, founded Mountain Goat Adventures in 2010 and strive to provide memorable, exciting events that promote an active lifestyle. Their mission is to put together events that offer a great experience, a well marked course, awesome swag, reasonable event pricing, as well as a high level of organization and efficiency at each event. All of their events feature chip timing and INSTANT real-time results. Upon finishing, racers can check their finish time and category placing.  Sorellas love racing at Mountain Goad Adventure productions, and we are proud to have them as a sponsor!

Advanced Mountain Biking Clinic

October 24, 2014

INSTRUCTOR:  Lisa Randall

WHEN:  Sunday, November 30, 2014 9:00 – 5:00 PM (Lunch Provided)

WHERE:  Lisa Randall’s residence in Canton, GA (near Blankets Creek MTB Trails)

WHO:  Sorella members only

Description:  Lisa Randall, a local racing machine and race director, will lead this all-day clinic.  We are so excited to have this opportunity to learn from her.  Here is what Lisa has to say about her clinic:  “This will be an advanced skills camp.  While there are a few skills I will go over that are low-risk and non-scary, the bulk of the time will be spent practicing technical descents through rock gardens and moderate drop-offs.  Riders should be intermediate to advanced and the camp is appropriate for someone able to attempt the 17 mile Snake Creek Gap Race.  It is up to the individual riders which obstacles they wish to try, however, I will be up front and say that there probably will be crashes and riders may fall.  I had my first true crash out there yesterday – the obstacles are challenging and it is possible to get hurt.  I will say though that becoming comfortable on the obstacles I’ve built has made me much more fluid and comfortable at events like Snake Creek Gap, and it is hard to find that type of riding at most of the local trails.  Everything is in a small, compact area, so multiple runs are easy to do and the trails all loop back around.”

Cyclocross Season is Here

October 13, 2014
Sorella Boundary Waters CX[5]It’s cyclocross season and time to pull out your off-road bike for some exciting cyclocross races.  Sorella Cycling has been showing up in force at the first three Georgia Cyclocross races. This picture was taken before the Women’s Cat 4 race at Boundary Waters Park on Sunday, October 5th. Starting off with a field of twelve racers, the front positions changed frequently over the 30 minute race period with Julia and Brittany battling for 2nd and 3rd.  Finally Julia Bryant pulled away and was able to keep second place tied up.Even though Mae Gurene races for ATLX, she is still a Sorella, and we love her even more knowing that she survived her first major crash on one of the tight turns in the woods.  Mae finished up on foot with a smile on her face and a hand up from the hecklers at the run up.
Sorella Cycling had a few women participating in other races at Boundary Waters.  Jean Miller and Trish Albert raced against a field of fifteen strong women in the Cat 1/2/3 race.  Jean finished seventh after a hard fought battle against the 6th and 8th place women. Beth Gearhart who normally races with the Cat 1/2/3 women braved a race against the “older gentlemen,” as she put it, and was faster than eight of the Cat 3/4 Men 35+.  Way to go Beth!
If you haven’t had a chance to take in a cyclocross event you should try to make one of the many local races promoted by Georgia Cyclocross.  Note that the Jim Miller and Grant Park races are the two “closest” races and we’re planning a social event at Grant Park.  Even if you aren’t a racer, bring some cowbell, something to hand-up, and your best heckling lines.  It’s a great way to spend a Sunday, have a little fun, and cheer on your Sorella sisters.
